The first thing he became aware of was water. The ocean to be exact. The breeze was salty and the only thing he could hear was the distinct sound of waves. Not stormy waves, but the gentle lull of the ocean on a beautiful day. Opening his eyes, the stallion saw that his conclusion had been correct. He stood on a beach of warm, pale sand, that stretched on for miles. The ocean lapped at the shore and the sun shone overhead. It was indeed a beautiful day. His first thought was to simply enjoy it - splash in the waves maybe. However, there was a growing sense of unease coming over him rooted in the question - where am I?
He had a sense that he was forgetting something, and indeed you'd think he'd remember how he ended up on this beach, or even where he came from to begin within. Instead the only awareness he had was of that moment. He was on a beach and his name was Astraeus. Any knowledge aside from that was beyond him. So he stood, facing the ocean, trying to make sense of what was going on.

Asclepius came alive with a mighty sneeze as his nostrils ejected unwelcome water. Despite this, his first instinct was to wriggle and writhe deeper into the sea, until he had enough room to swim. Now his nostrils and ears clammed up, keeping water out, but also blunting scents and sounds. The sodden, feathered wings on his forelegs did their best impression of fins, but it was his long, finned tail that pushed him forwards.
He did not know where he was, or why, or how. His name was Asclepius, and he was a stallion. He knew how to swim, and how to use his gills so he need not breach the surface. Yet, he knew he would rather go up to the white beach, not further into the ocean. But that would mean getting out of the water, and while Asclepius felt that he could do it, he could not quite remember how. He'd already learned that his long tail, while excellent for swimming, was not ideal for beaches. Perhaps this was another thing he would simply know once he tried?
Asclepius swam upwards, breaching the surface horn-first. With swirling movements of his tail and some flailing of his forelegs, he could push his head, neck, and a good bit of shoulder up out of the water. A cresting wave sloshed around him on its way to the shore, where another horse was standing. Asclepius did not know the other horse's name was Astraeus, but he did know that the other horse was positively beautiful.
For several seconds, Asclepius could only stare, shocked. Then he flung himself to the side, body arching like a serpent's as he dove. Asclepius swam in anxious circles. Another horse! Asclepius knew this in the same ineffable way he knew everything else. He was a horse, and that was another horse, and they were the same. And—
And Asclepius found that he did not want to be alone anymore. He actually really wanted to be near that other horse. Yet, at the same time, going nearer to that other horse would mean... what? What would he do when he got there? Asclepius felt a brief fizzle of irritation. He knew everything else, so why not this?
Maybe he'd figure it out when he remembered how to walk on a beach? Asclepius certainly hoped so, because he couldn't resist peeking above the surface again. His white face and three-tipped horn were easy to spot in the blue water, but he'd lost track of the other horse.

As Astraeus stared out across the ocean, he become aware of something splashing in the gentle waves. The glimpse of a tail indicated to him that is was some sort of aquatic creature, though he was unsure how he knew that. However, when a horned head peeked out of the water, Astraeus was looking at a creature with a head similar to his. How he knew this without ever having seen himself, he once again didn't know. Ever since he woke up on this beach the colourful stallion was finding he had more questions than answers. Perhaps whoever this fish-horse creature was could enlighten him. "Hello there!" The stallion called out in what he hoped was a loud enough voice to catch the other creature's attention. The sound of the sea lapping against the beach was loud enough that Astraeus worried his voice would be lost to the newcomer.
With the hope of being heard better, the stallion took a few steps into the ocean waves. The water that splashed against his pasterns was comfortingly warm. Feeling emboldened, Astraeus continued in up to his knees before pausing again. "I'm Astraeus!" He introduced himself to the horselike being that he was now much closer to. The tips of his golden tail floated behind him and his golden eyes glowed as he grinned in a welcoming manner.

The other horse's dark coat stood out against the white beach, and Asclepius watched as the other horse splashed into the sea. Even when the water reached the other horse's knees, it was not deep enough for Asclepius to swim comfortably in, but at it was enough that Asclepius would not find himself stranded if he approached... so, very cautiously, he did.
With his head held out of the water, his nostrils and ears un-clammed themselves. He couldn't smell anything besides saltwater, but now he could hear the other horse speaking over the ceaseless thunder of the waves. Astraeus! Well, of course other horses would have names, too— it seemed perfectly obvious now that Asclepius had thought of it.
He probably ought to reciprocate, right? Asclepius stopped when his lower fin brushed against the sandy sea bottom. If he and Astraeus both stretched out their noses, they could just touch. How close would be too close? Was there such a thing? "I— I'm Asclepius?" he tried. "Are you— do you— um." His long ears fell back as he tried to think of what he should say. "Your eyes are glowing?"

The other horse approached, with his head raised higher. Astraeus could now clearly see that the creature before him had the head of a horse and the tail of, well, some sort of fish perhaps? A three pronged horn decorated the top of his pale face, and the rest of his body appeared to be dark in colour, from what Astraeus could see in the water. The sea-horse creature introduced himself as Asclepius and commented on the colourful stallions glowing golden eyes. The tone of uncertainty in the other stallions voice lessened Astraeus' hope that this other equine might have some answers to his questions. The other stallion seemed to only add to the questions. Were Astraeus' eyes glowing? He glanced down into the lapping waters in an instinctual attempt to see his reflection, but couldn't make anything out. However, there was a sense of rightness at hearing that he had glowing eyes. That information seemed correct.
Astraeus smiled at the other stallion. "I suppose they are glowing," he agreed amiably before pointing out, "you have a fish tail," with a nod towards Asclepius' rear end. As much as Astraeus felt a rightness at being told his eyes glowed, there was also a lingering feeling that glowing eyes and horses with fish tails weren't normal. However one defined that word. There was also a sense that whatever beach he had just woken up on was unfamiliar to him. It was an odd contradiction of feelings swirling around inside him. Her felt that he was where he was supposed to be, wherever that was. At the same time, nothing felt quite right.
Deciding to be optimistic about Asclepius' ability to answer his questions, Astraeus asked the other stallion, "Do you know where we are? I don't think I've ever been here before."

Asclepius felt a flash of fear when Astraeus glanced away. Had he done something wrong? Would Astraeus reject him? What would he— but then Astraeus smiled. This encounter seemed to be going well after all.
When prompted, Asclepius twisted to look at his own tail, knees digging into the sand below the water. He fidgeted, twisting his tail to one side so his lower fin wasn't crushed beneath him. He also folded his wings into more comfortable positions, but they were tucked under his barrel and not readily apparent.
"We're on the beach," was Asclepius' very helpful reply. He frowned, confused. "Haven't we always been here? I don't remember anything else." His frown became pensive as he thought. "Is that odd? Only I feel there should be... other places."

At the mention of his unusual tail, the other stallion turned to examine himself. Astraeus wondered if Asclepius hadn't noticed his fish tail before that moment. He didn't seem surprised by it's presence though. Perhaps he was so accustomed to it he forgot about. Either way, the other stallion didn't make any further comments on his unusual appearance. Instead he answered Astraeus' question about where they were, and the colourful's stallions hopes of finding out what was going on from Asclepius were quickly dashed. He didn't seem to have anymore insight into the situation than Astraeus.
The other stallion seemed to be in a similar state of remembrance - that is to say he didn't remember anything before the beach. He also seemed less concerned about his lack of memories, if his questioning of whether the absence of any memories before the beach was any indication. Clearly Astraeus would have to search elsewhere for answers. He turned his head to look back at the beach. It was all sand as far as he could see. The sand seemed to slope upwards away from the beach, which limited his view of what was beyond. Perhaps there would be a better vantage point from there to see if there was anything other than beach nearby.
Astraeus turned his head back to the other stallion. Although he hadn't been able to answer his questions, he seemed amiable enough. Astraeus could use some company, if the other stallion was able to travel on land. The fish tail might make that rather difficult. Only one way to find out! "I think it's rather odd, not having any memories before this beach," Astraeus admitted before getting to the point, "I'd like to try and at least find out where we are. The top of that hill over there might offer a better vantage point. If you're able to travel on land, would you like to join me? I wouldn't mind some company." The colourful stallion watched Asclepius expectantly for an answer.

Once again, Asclepius found that it seemed obvious in hindsight. The beach was smoothed by the wind and sea, making it easy to see the utter lack of food or water anywhere on the pristine white sand. Of course there must be other places. They'd need to eat something, and Ascelpius could testify that the seafloor looked just as barren as the seashore, as far as the eye could see.
Astraeus seemed a little preoccupied with these supposed 'missing memories'. Asclepius didn't feel any need to investigate, personally. Before was secondary to now, if indeed there had been anything before now. Asclepius was happy to accept that new horses were simply formed out of seafoam. He decided not to say so; he didn't want Astraeus to stop tolerating his presence.
"Oh, yes," said Asclepius, and he wiggled a little closer. "I would like to stay with you. I think—" He paused, frowned, and twisted his neck to peer past Astraeus, up onto the beach. "I think I can walk. I feel certain that I can— only I'm not sure how. I've never done it before..."
To stay in the sea would mean being left behind. Suddenly determined to avoid such a lonely fate, Asclepius began to heave himself up onto the shore. The wings on his forelegs fluttered furiously to shake off the water. In his flailing, he knocked his inner left wing against his right leg, and had to stop and wince. "Ow!"

A grin lit up Astraeus' face at both Asclepius agreeing to accompany, and his belief that he would be able to walk on land. Despite his lack of memories to confirm this, Astraeus felt certain it would be positively boring travelling alone. He watched as the other stallion began wiggling towards the shore. He followed along, splashing unto the beach as Asclepius attempted to left himself unto shore. As the front of his body emerged from the water two legs not all that unlike those that Astraeus had appeared. The only difference was the presence of wings on each leg. The wings made their presence known when Asclepius clumsily swatted himself with one of them and let out a cry of pain. At this point Astraeus was having some serious doubts about Asclepius' ability to traverse over land.
Stepping towards the other stallion he asked, "Are you alright?" A look of concern on his face. Astraeus was most concerned that Asclepius wouldn't be able to accompany him much further, and then what was he supposed to do? Wander around alone? For all he knew they were the only two living creatures on this island. "Do you think you'll actually be able to make it onto land?" Astraeus questioned while eyeing Asclepius' still very present fish tail.

Asclepius mouthed at the bruised wing, lipping over the white feathers until he was satisfied there was no real damage. This was a lesson he'd have to remember: to take special care with his wings and legs. He took it to heart now, folding all four wings flush to his fetlocks. "I'm alright."
"I think," he continued, "I think if I just..." He lifted his right leg with its tightly-folded wings, and set his right hoof on the sand with a quiet thump. Then he did the same with the left, with another thump as his left hoof landed a little further up the beach. And then, in hindsight, it was obvious. There was a rhythm to walking, different than that of swimming, but he knew both. Thump-thump, thump-thump— yes, that was it!
His long tail twisted and split apart. Two hind legs spun and popped into position. A black waterfall of hair unspooled from the leftover bit of tail. Asclepius stood and stepped forwards in one smooth motion, body matching the rhythm in mind.
"The top of that hill, you said?" asked Asclepius, even as he walked towards it. His ears were turned back to listen, and he turned his head for a glimpse of Astraeus, following despite the fact that he appeared to be leading. |
