Asclepius had kept the sea in his line of sight, reluctant to wander too far inland and deprive himself of a potential escape route. It was an odd, selfish instinct, since Astraeus couldn't follow him into the sea, but it was there all the same. Astraeus hadn't tried to herd Asclepius further inland, so Asclepius wasn't forced to choose between his only friend and his other form.
As they walked, the white sand of the beach became intermixed with larger, more colorful pebbles, until their hooves were crunching over a layer of crystalline gravel. The chunks were brittle, and easily crushed underhoof into ever smaller splinters. Asclepius had begun walking more and more cautiously, eyes lingering on the ground as he picked out a path. The wings on his forelegs were held high, as if preparing for takeoff.
Asclepius slowed until he stopped entirely. Before them, hundreds of hexagonal columns grew up through the layer of gravel, so snugly clustered together that they formed a series of shallow steps all the way down to the sea on their right. Each column was a different color and clarity of crystal. Upon closer inspection, they were prone to flaking horizontally, which preserved their flat tops despite the efforts of erosion.
"It's beautiful!" said Asclepius. His wings fluttered in amazement. He turned his head, pointing to the left, adding, "And look, these... things get even taller over there." |

Since Asclepius had first sprouted legs and the pair had set out, the two stallions had kept fairly close to the ocean. They followed along the shore finding more and more white sand as they went. Astraeus didn't mind, he supposed it would be easier to avoid getting lost in the sand if they kept the ocean in sight. They could always return to where they came from if all else failed. The only problem was, the colourful stallion was starting to feel thirsty. He knew enough to know he needed water, and it couldn't be the salty water of the ocean.
Just as Astraeus was beginning to think these thoughts, the white sand began to fade into colourful gravel. The rainbow gravel reflected light like a crystal and crunched under his hooves as he walked. It wasn't long before the colourful stallion noticed the columns of crystal forming a sort of staircase up from the ocean. His travelling companion commented on the beauty of the scene before them, and pointed out the columns grew even taller to their left. Astraeus nodded in agreement taking a moment to take in the scene before him "It is very beautiful." He said with a nod, before looking around and sniffing the air. "Do you think their might be some fresh water around here somewhere?" He looked to Asclepius to answer. Astraeus couldn't smell any fresh water nearby, but perhaps somewhere up the hexagonal, crystal steps they would find a spring. The stallion took a few steps in that direction.

"Let's go look," said Asclepius. Personally, he was more hungry than thirsty, but not enough to try directing Astraeus instead of the other way around. So, they climbed the hexagonal steps, hooves clacking and crunching over the brittle crystal.
At some point, a crystal had grown in crooked, pushing its neighbors out of alignment also. The effect had cascaded until the crystal columns had grown crooked enough to fall over. Instead of hexagonal steps, Asclepius found himself gingerly trying not to slip on ramps of crystal. At least many of the surfaces were worn and weathered, so his hooves had some traction.
His wings flapped nervously while passing beneath an irregular cluster of crystal that had fallen to form a jagged archway. The light of the descending sun was rendered in rainbow hues wherever it was filtered through the increasingly tall crystals. Or... perhaps the crystals were not taller, but rather the ramps between them had fallen further down? It was hard to tell.
Asclepius had not yet learned of rain, but the weathered surfaces of the crystal ramps and walls knew it well. Here was a crevice where enough colorful gravel and sand had accumulated to prevent gathered rainwater from draining through the cracks. Asclepius tried a sip, and couldn't stop himself from grimacing. "Ah! It'th thour."
