The gentle lapping of waves on the shore filtered into Khione's ears, waking her from a deep slumber. Blinking the sleep from her eyes she gazed around to find herself standing on a beach of soft white sand. All she could see in either direction was sand - broken up here and there by rocks. Of course there was also the ocean behind her. The salty smell in the air let her know she had not awoken beside a lake. Cautiously, she took a step towards the water. From the looks of it there was no other land formations nearby. Taking another glance around, Khione saw that nothing looked familiar. Although, for some reason she couldn't think of where she might have been before she woke up on the beach. The only thing she was really conscious of was her name - Khione.

Ghost was playfully trotting along the beach, enjoying the view and the salty fragance. He came upon a rocky formation that he clambered upon thoughtlessly, just for the heck of it. His hooves made a hard scraping sound against the basalt rocks and his muscles rippled underneath his glossy black coat as he climbed.
At the flat top of the formation his majestic form stood, striking a triumphant pose with his black and white mane billowing in the seaside breeze.
From his high vantage point Ghost noticed a cerulean horse in the sand below. His ivory horn gleamed in the light and his lion's tail flicked behind him. He said nothing, and pretended to glare at the other equine hoping to scare the other with his visage like a skull.

As Khione stood on the shore watching the waves, she felt a presence behind her. Turning, she saw a black and white horse looking down at her from a rocky vantage point. The scent of the horse carried to her on the breeze - indicating she was looking at a stallion. Although it was clear she was looking at another equine, there were a few clear differences between them. An ivory horn protruded from the stallion's skull, and instead of a tail of flowing hair a lion's tail extended behind him. His grey eyes were not welcoming, but this was the first creature she'd seen since waking up on this beach feeling confused. Perhaps he would have some idea where they were.
Taking a tentative step forward, Khione spoke. "Hello there. I'm Khione." She offered up the only knowledge she'd maintained - her name.

Operation spook the stranger turned out a rotund failure as Khione greeted Ghost rather warmly, with only a hint of hesitation showing in her melodic voice. Now that he got a better look at the mare Ghost felt almost guilty about trying to scare her earlier.
The hostile look in his eyes seemed to quickly thaw into one of bewilderment.
"No running, no screaming in fear?"
"I must be... losing my touch!" The stallion snorted, shaking his head in mocking lament.
Then in a more serious voice he stated:
"I am Ghost."

The stallion seemed confused by her greeting at first. He had been trying to scare her, or a least intimidate her it seemed. He certainly appeared intimidating this, Ghost, he said his name was. But, Khione would take her chances. It seemed better than wandering aimlessly around this beach. "Well Ghost, I figured I'd take my chances with you. You're the first horse I've met since waking up here." She explained. Although Ghost didn't seem to be the friendliest horse, maybe if she was cordial she could get some answers from him. Hopefully he would have a better idea of what was going on than her. "You don't happen to know where here is, do you?" Khione inquired, with of swish of her head indicating the landscape around them.

As Khione spoke of her distressing situation Ghost's guilt blossomed into shame. His stance was decidedly less imposing and he felt inclined to help.
"There are others." He said gruffly but encouragingly.
"But they seem scattered and afraid, even without my assistance I may add. I have not seen any semblance of order for places to have names or boundaries"
"You be where you be and you go where you want." He tossed his head back in a gesture akin to shrugging one's shoulders. "It is rather refreshing."
"...Khione... right?" He may have gotten the pronunciation wrong, "You ask difficult questions... and I am afraid I have nothing to offer you except that we may be all dead and this may be the afterlife we are in."
And he sounded absolutely fine with that.
The other side of the basalt formation was less steep so the stallion made his way down gracefully and towards the water.

Well, the fact that this stallion had seen other horses was reassuring. The fact that non of them seemed to be any more informed about the situation was less so. Ghost's outlook on the whole thing was rather bleak. Khione didn't feel dead, but she's never been dead before, so how would she know? Looking down at her hooves, she stamped them on the ground. She felt them hit the sand with reassuring thuds. She certainly felt rather alive. Then again, with her memory as it was what did she know?
Looking up from her ponderings, Khione found that Ghost had left his perch to approach the water and was thus now standing right in front of her. He seemed far less concerned by the thought of them all being dead that her. Then again, he seemed to be a rather odd sort. Though she didn't remember interactions with other horses in the past, she got the feeling this wasn't how it normally went.
Deciding to ignore his comment about the afterlife, Khione foraged on looking for information. "Have you seen what the land beyond this beach looks like? Is there anything but sand and rock?" It seemed Ghost had been cognizant of where they were for longer than her at least. Perhaps he'd had time to do some exploring.

Cosmos regained his consciousness, his ears pricking to pick up voices that were carried towards him on the wind. As he blinked his two-toned eyes open, the strong smell of salt hit his nostrils, and he felt how thirsty he was with a desperation that knew that the water was undrinkable without getting any closer to it. He pushed himself to his hooves, snorting at the feeling of the sand shifting under his weight, and cast a look around. His mind felt strange and empty, and the pang of fear that caused frustrated him. He did not appreciate being afraid.
Spotting no immediate threats, his ears swiveled to locate the voices he had heard. They were distant, and when the wind changed direction he lost them entirely. The stallion began to trot in the direction he had heard them, determined to find the source. He eventually came to a rock formation, and the voices were clearly coming from the other side. He made his way upward, stumbling only once or twice on some of the narrower bits. Once on top, he couldn't stop his snort of surprise - there were two horses there, and one had a horn and a tail like a predator!
He made his way down, nickering out a greeting to let them know he was there. The stallion was annoyed at pretty much everything at the moment, an unpleasant side effect of not knowing what was going on.
"Hello there," he greeted them, his voice tense, "I certainly hope there's at least fresh water nearby."

Khione was distracted from her conversation with Ghost be the appearance of another stallion. A nicker was the first indication of the other horse's arrival. Turning in the direction the noise came from, Khione saw a brightly marked stallion making his way down the rocks. Although the majority of his coat was black, all along his back looked like a colourful galaxy. He greeted them with a simple hello, before questioning if there was fresh water nearby. At the mention of water, Khione realized she was indeed rather thirsty, and the salty ocean water wasn't going to help with that.
The mare turned to Ghost to inquire about this and found him gone. She'd hardly looked away and it was as if the stallion was never there. She began to wonder if he had been a figment of her imagination. It had been a weird day so far after all. Turning back to the new arrival, Khione returned his greeting. "Hello, I'm Khione. I haven't seen any freshwater, but I haven't gotten far from this spot since I woke up." The mare gestured with her head to indicate the beach around them as the spot she hadn't left. "There must be a river, or at least a stream around here somewhere."
